Life Skills Outreach Ministry
Diversity Scholarship Application
The Mt. Zion UMC Racial Unification (RU) team was formed in March 2021 and sought to raise awareness of the issues facing historically marginalized populations. In 2022 the RU team wishes to demonstrate the compassion that will benefit deserving students from our community.
The RU Mission Statement is as follows: We truly love others, recognizing our differences. We will listen intently, learn what others need, lament when others suffer or struggle, and leverage our gifts to help everyone, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The RU team continues to educate ourselves individually and as a team in understanding the impact of racism. The Life Skills Outreach Ministry (LSOM) project provides merit-based, need-based scholarships for continuing education at the college or technical school level for members of historically marginalized populations who reside in eastern Cobb County (Sprayberry, Wheeler, Lassiter, Pope, Kell and Walton High School footprints).
The RU team will administer the diversity scholarship application and review process based upon the following timeline:
Diversity Scholarship Application Timeline
Receive applications – June 15, 2022
Review applications – July 15, 2022
Award recipient’s scholarships to continuing education institutions – August 15, 2022
The RU team will provide mentorship for scholarship recipients. Mentorship involves a mentor and scholarship recipient meeting periodically (e.g. twice a month) as mutually agreed upon during the fall and winter semesters. These 1x1 meetings can be conducted in-person or virtually (e.g. Zoom, phone call) to provide mentoring for life skills, character development, and spiritual growth. Through building relationships with students, mentors can better understand the types of challenges that persons from historically marginalized populations face. All in-person meetings will follow the Safe Sanctuary policy of Mt. Zion UMC.
Up to five (5) scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded for the 2022-23 school calendar year. Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a continuing education institution for the fall semester before receiving this scholarship.
